Silver Chart 21 Feb 2011
Since my last post about silver – just three weeks ago – the metal has staged an extraordinary rally rising from $27 per ounce to trade at time of writing at $33.49 per ounce and fast galloping towards my 2011 target of $37. I now post much of my metals analysis on my personal annacoulling blog which is where you will find a more detailed look at both gold and silver.

Silver Chart 26 Jan 2011
Spot silver has been following the gold price down but has, so far, managed to avoid falling below the 100 day moving average, closing yesterday’s session at $26.83 per ounce. However, the most important aspect of silver trading at the moment is the conflicting signals being seen in the silver market where prices appear to have gone into backwardation, something not seen since October 2008. Backwardation is, of course, when future prices are lower than those current. The FT’s article explains this state of affairs in more detail.

Spot silver prices mirrored the gold price ending as a wide spread up candle which finally broke out of the recent sideways consolidation and closed fractionally above the $28 per ounce level at $28.036. As such this has now given us a clear trading signal and we can expect to see the industrial metal continue its recent long term bullish trend, and indeed in early trading this morning this positive sentiment has continued, with spot silver trading at time of writing at $28.49, and now looking set to take a run towards the high of early November in the $29 price region. All four moving averages remain firmly supportive of the trend and with the 9 day now having crossed back above the 14 day average this is confirming the bullish sentiment once more, and with both the 40 and 200 day also pointing firmly higher the longer term outlook remains strongly bullish.

Last week was a quiet one for spot silver which continued to hold above all four moving averages until late on Friday when the industrial metal just managed to breach the 14 day average to the downside thus ending the week at $26.66 per ounce. This sideways price consolidation has continued in today’s silver trading with the metal regaining some of Friday’s lost ground as it trades back above $27 per ounce and attempts to hold above the 9 day moving average as well. This picture of sideways price action now seems likely to continue in the short term given the uncertainty surrounding the euro and with the focus very much on currency and equity markets at present. In addition we also have to contend with the traditional year end position squaring and general thin trading conditions which can lead to unexpected price spikes. In the longer term the outlook for spot silver still remains firmly bullish and once we clear the $28 per ounce level this should then provide a strong platform of support which should see the metal continue to climb and develop its longer term trend and in due course move back above $29 in the first quarter of 2011. The longer term moving averages remain fully supportive of this analysis with both the 40 and 200 day pointing sharply higher.
